Exercises like walking lunges, squats, Romanian deadlifts, chest press, rows and calve raises are just a few really great exercises that will built your strength and help you put on size.
Benefits of dumbbells:
- You don’t need much space
- Great for building size
- Great for building strength
- Weights increase bone density
- Increase stabilzation
- Addresses muscle imbalances
- Increased range of motion
- Less likely to injure yourself
The great thing about dumbbells is that they are small so you don’t need much space to store them or use them and they are relatively inexpensive compared with other exercise machines. Many old school bodybuilders would use only barbells and dumbbells for their workouts as they found it gives the muscle a better workout that isolation machines. Nothing beats building muscle like doing free weights for a maximum amount of reps. When you pair a good pair of dumbbells with a good weights bench then you can pretty much workout any body part.
A great benefit of working out with dumbbells is that it addresses any muscle imbalances that you might have. For example if your left bicep is weaker than your right, using dumbbells will better address this issue than a barbell as each arm has to lift the dumbbell separately. Using a dumbbell for most exercises will give you a greater range of motion. Let’s take the dumbbell bench press as an example. With a pair o dumbbells you can lower the weight lower as you are not restricted by a barbell going across the front of your chest. This allows for a greater range of movement which can give a nicer shape to the peck. As you can tell by now we love dumbbells!
What to look for when shopping for dumbbells:
- Fixed weight/adjustable weight
- How much weight can they hold?
- Are they safe for your floor?
There is more to shopping for dumbbells than might think. For example do you want fixed weight dumbells, adjustable weight dumbbells, floor safe dumbbells? These are things most people tend to not think about when shopping for a pair. There is a huge range to choose from when it comes to dumbbells so lets take a look at some of the main types of dumbbells you may see when shopping around.
Fixed weight dumbbells:
These dumbbells as you might have guessed by name are a fixed weight meaning the weight cannot be adjusted on them. This means that you have to get a weight that you deem to be suitable but challenging to you. These can be good for circuit type workouts but with regards to strength training you are going to be limited. These are great as you don’t have to stop your workout and unscrew the weight to adjust it which can really break your workout flow and this can be a pain with adjustable weight dumbbells. In saying that you can be limited with the weight you purchase.
The whole idea of strength training is that you increase the load on the muscle. Now this can be done via adding extra reps but eventually you will want to move up in weight even just a little. However do not rule these out as they are a good option and more affordable than other types of dumbbells.
Adjustable weight dumbbells:
The benefits of these might be quite obvious as they allow you to adjust how much weight you have on each dumbbell. This is great for serious trainers who are looking to increase their weight throughout the workout or throughout the workout plan. Whilst it may be a bit of a pain to unscrew the weight each time you want to increase it having a pair of these means you don’t need a full rack of fixed weight dumbbells. All you need is one pair of these adjustable weight dumbbells and some extra weight and you have everything to get going.
What material are the dumbbells?
When using dumbbells in your home your floor (if wooden) can get scratched so it is important to look for a pair of dumbbells that are safe for your flooring. You can get rubber dumbbells that will not mark the floor so this is something to be wary of when shopping for dumbbells.’
A good pair of dumbbells are essential for a home workout and the options are really endless when it comes to exercises and working the different body parts.
